Shopping in Crete

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and is known for its beautiful beaches, ancient ruins, and rich history. Some places to see in Crete that are worth a visit include:

The Palace of Knossos: This ancient palace, located near the city of Heraklion, is believed to have been the center of the Minoan civilization around 2000 BC. The palace features intricate frescoes and has been partially restored to give visitors an idea of what it may have looked like in ancient times.

Elafonisi Beach: This beach is located on the western side of the island and is known for its crystal-clear waters and pinkish-white sand. Elafonisi is also home to a small island that is connected to the mainland by a thin strip of land and is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing.

Samaria Gorge: This National Park is a popular destination for hikers, known for its spectacular scenery. The gorge is the longest in Europe, and the hike through the gorge takes about 6-8 hours.

Chania: This is one of the most picturesque towns in Crete, with a Venetian harbor and charming, narrow streets lined with traditional shops and restaurants.

Rethymno: This coastal town is located on the north coast of the island and is known for its well-preserved Venetian fortress and charming Old Town.

Matala: A small coastal village, located in the southern coast of Crete, that was popular in the 60s and 70s among hippies, and has now become a tourist attraction, as it features beautiful beaches and caves carved into the cliffs that were used as tombs in ancient times.

Spinalonga Island: Located off the coast of the town of Elounda, Spinalonga was used as a leper colony until 1957 and today is a popular tourist destination, known for its Venetian fortress and well-preserved buildings.

These are just a few of the many places to see in Crete, as the island has much more to offer, but these are some of the most famous and popular tourist destination that you can visit and explore, haggling is considered a common practice and is expected in the local markets. This is not the case when it comes to the bigger stores and supermarkets. You will also find that most of the shops and markets are closed on Sundays and the siesta time is observed in the afternoon, during this time many stores and shops are closed for a few hours.
